Nardi outdoor living room design

How to Design an Outdoor Living Room with Nardi

There is a particular kind of magic that happens when a garden stops being a place you look at and becomes a place you live in. It is the difference between a patio with a few chairs pushed against the wall and a genuine outdoor living room — a considered, layered space with a sofa you sink into, a low table for your glass of wine, soft light pooling as the evening draws in, and the quiet confidence of a room that simply happens to have the sky for a ceiling. In Ireland, where we are famous for grabbing every dry hour with both hands, that transformation is worth more than almost any indoor renovation. It stretches your home into the fresh air and doubles your usable living space from roughly May to October, and on the mild days, well beyond.

This is a designer's masterclass in creating exactly that. Over the next few thousand words we will move through the whole process the way I would if I were standing in your garden with a measuring tape and a mug of tea: reading the space and zoning it, choosing a modular sofa as your anchor, building out lounge seating, layering in coffee and side tables, dressing the shade and the floor, and then — the part everyone forgets until it is too dark to see — lighting the whole thing and styling the table so it feels finished. Throughout, I will lean on Nardi, the Italian outdoor furniture house we trust above all others for the Irish climate, and a few carefully chosen finishing pieces. Let's begin.

Why an Outdoor Living Room, and Why Now

An outdoor living room is not a dining set. That is the first mental shift. Dining outdoors is lovely, but it is transactional — you sit, you eat, you leave. A living room invites you to linger. It is built around lounging, conversation, reading, an afternoon nap, a slow morning coffee, a late glass of something with friends after the plates have been cleared. The furniture is lower, softer and more generous. The layout is arranged for talking rather than eating. And crucially, it is designed to be beautiful and functional in every kind of Irish weather, not just the three perfect days of summer.

That last point is where material choice becomes everything, and it is why I keep coming back to Nardi. Founded in Chiampo, in the Vicenza province of northern Italy, Nardi is a family-run firm that has been perfecting outdoor furniture for decades. Their pieces are made from batch-dyed, fibreglass-reinforced resin with built-in anti-UV protection — which in plain English means the colour runs all the way through the material rather than sitting on the surface as paint, so it will not flake, fade or need repainting. It shrugs off rain, sea air, frost and sun in equal measure, and at the end of its long life the resin is fully recyclable. For an Irish garden that swings from a lashing Atlantic shower to a surprise heatwave inside a single afternoon, that resilience is not a luxury. It is the whole point.

So as we design, hold two ideas in your head at once: this should feel as considered and comfortable as your indoor sitting room, and it should be able to stay outside, uncovered, through whatever the sky throws at it. Get both right and you will use the space ten times more than you ever expected.

Step One: Read the Space and Zone It

Before a single piece of furniture is chosen, stand in your garden or on your patio and simply look. Where does the sun fall in the late afternoon, when you are most likely to be out there? Where does the wind funnel through? Where is the view you want to face, and where is the fence, bin store or neighbour's window you would rather turn your back on? An outdoor living room is oriented, always, toward warmth, shelter and the best outlook — and away from the ugly and the exposed.

Next, think in zones rather than in objects. A well-designed outdoor room usually has three: a lounge zone (the sofa and lounge chairs, the heart of the space), a low-table or coffee zone woven into it, and often a small secondary zone — a pair of chairs in a sunnier corner, a compact dining or drinks spot, a bench by the herbs. Zoning is what separates a room from a scattering of furniture. Even in a modest courtyard you can suggest two zones with nothing more than a rug, a change in furniture height, or a single well-placed planter.

The classic beginner's mistake is pushing everything flat against the walls and boundaries, leaving a lonely expanse of paving in the middle. Resist it. Just as indoors, pulling your seating inward — floating the sofa off the wall, angling chairs toward each other — instantly makes a space feel intentional and intimate. Leave generous walking routes (about 70cm minimum) around the arrangement, and keep roughly 40cm between the front of your seating and the edge of your coffee table so there is room for legs and for setting a glass down without a stretch. These indoor proportions translate directly to the garden.

Step Two: Choose Your Anchor — the Modular Sofa

Every living room has a hero, and outdoors it is almost always the sofa. This is the piece that tells your eye, and everyone else's, that this is a room. It is where the design begins and where the budget deserves to go first, because it is the piece you and your guests will physically be in for hours at a time.

For an outdoor living room, I nearly always recommend a modular sofa rather than a fixed three-seater, and the reasoning is simple: a garden is not a fixed space the way a sitting room is. You want to reconfigure it. Sun-worshipping in a straight run one week, curled into an L-shape for a big group the next, split into two facing loveseats for an intimate supper the week after. Modularity gives you that freedom, and it future-proofs your investment against a house move, a new patio, or simply a change of heart.

My first choice for pure lounging luxury is the Nardi Komodo 5 Multi-Layout Lounger. Komodo is Nardi's flagship modular system, and the five-piece multi-layout configuration is a genuine outdoor living room in a single purchase. The name says everything — the elements can be arranged into a long sofa, a corner suite, or split into separate loungers to suit the day and the crowd.

Nardi Komodo 5 Multi-Layout Outdoor Lounger modular sofa

The frames are that same weatherproof Nardi resin, so the sofa can live outdoors year-round, while the cushions come in acrylic outdoor fabrics designed to resist fading and dry quickly after a shower. What I love about specifying Komodo as your anchor is how completely it sets the tone: put it down and the rest of the room almost designs itself around it. The scale is generous, the lines are clean and contemporary, and it reads instantly as a comfortable place to spend a whole afternoon.

If your space is smaller, or you would rather build your seating up piece by piece over time, the Maximo Modular Armchair is the smarter starting point. Maximo is a “put-together” system — each armchair is a complete, beautiful seat on its own, and you simply add units and link them to grow a two-seater into a corner sofa as your budget and your needs expand.

Maximo Modular Armchair outdoor sofa in Basalto with Sunbrella cushions

Maximo comes in a genuinely sophisticated palette — the resin frames in soft neutrals like Gesso, warm Terra, deep Basalto and sage Cactus, paired with premium Sunbrella and regenerated-fabric cushions in tones such as Timo, Perla, Lava and Cannella. For a designer, that pairing of a muted frame with a tonal cushion is where the whole scheme finds its character, so take your time choosing here. A Basalto frame with Perla cushions is quietly elegant; a Cactus frame with Timo cushions leans into the garden's greens. There is no wrong answer, only the mood you want to set.

Whichever anchor you choose, position it first and position it well — facing the light and the view, floated off the wall, with enough room behind it to walk. Everything else in the room now hangs off this one decision.

Step Three: Build Out the Lounge Seating

A sofa alone is a sofa. A sofa plus a pair of lounge chairs is a room. Lounge chairs are what give an outdoor living room its conversational geometry — they let people face each other, they break up the mass of a big sofa, and they add the relaxed, reclining comfort that says “stay a while.” This is also where you get to introduce a second silhouette and a little personality.

For serious, feet-up, close-your-eyes relaxation, the Nardi Net Relax Chair is a masterpiece of the type. It is a fully reclining lounger with a distinctive perforated net back that is both strikingly modern and quietly practical — the mesh lets air move and rain drain straight through, so it dries in minutes.

Nardi Net Relax reclining lounge chair

It comes in a beautiful spectrum of colours — mustard Senape, coral Corallo, dove Tortora, willow-green Salice, charcoal Antracite and crisp Bianco — so you can either match your sofa's tones for a serene, monochrome room or use a single Net Relax as a deliberate splash of colour, a piece of functional sculpture in the corner of the garden.

For a softer, more upholstered feel that sits closer to an indoor armchair, the Nardi Folio Armchair is a beautiful companion to a modular sofa. Folio has a gentle, enveloping shell and a refined profile that works whether you set two of them opposite the sofa or dot them around the wider garden.

Nardi Folio Outdoor Armchair in Agave green

In its Agave green, Tortora, Bianco, Tabacco and Antracite finishes, Folio is one of those quietly clever pieces that reads as high-end without shouting about it. The Agave in particular is a gift in an Irish garden — a soft, muted sage that sits with foliage rather than fighting it.

If you want a rocker-style lounge chair with a bit of gentle movement, the Nardi Doga Relax Chair is a joy. Its curved base gives a subtle, soothing rock, and its high, wrap-around back makes it feel cocooning and private — the chair everyone quietly competes for.

Nardi Doga Relax rocking lounge chair in Agave

Doga's palette is exceptionally elegant — Agave, Tabacco, Menta, Perla, Marsala, Cappuccino, Antracite and Bianco — a range of dusty, sophisticated tones that a colour specialist could happily build an entire scheme around. Marsala's warm oxblood against a Perla sofa is a combination I keep coming back to.

And for a classic, cushioned armchair to round out a conversation group, the Nardi Aria Armchair with Cushion is the reliable, comfortable workhorse of the collection — a well-proportioned seat with a proper cushion that pulls up neatly to the low table for a drink, or sits back for reading.

Nardi Aria Outdoor Armchair with cushion

A designer's rule of thumb for the seating mix: aim for an odd, varied number of seat types rather than a matched suite. A modular sofa plus two Folio armchairs and one Doga rocker feels collected and human; four identical chairs around a sofa can feel like a waiting room. Vary the height and the silhouette, keep the material family and colour story consistent, and the room will feel effortlessly curated.

Step Four: Layer in the Tables

Tables are the connective tissue of a living room. They are where the drink goes, where the book rests, where the candle sits — and getting them right is what makes the space genuinely usable rather than merely pretty. Outdoors you want a mix: a low coffee table at the heart of the lounge, one or two side tables within arm's reach of the chairs, and possibly a dining or drinks table in your secondary zone.

The natural coffee table for a Komodo or Maximo sofa is the Nardi Komodo Tavolino Coffee Table. It is designed as part of the same Komodo family, so its proportions and finishes sit in perfect harmony with the modular seating — a low, generous surface that anchors the centre of the arrangement.

Nardi Komodo Tavolino outdoor coffee table in Agave

Available in Tortora, Bianco, Antracite and Agave, the Tavolino lets you either match your sofa frame for a seamless look or introduce a gentle contrast. Position it centrally, about 40cm off the front of the sofa, and you have created the true middle of your outdoor room.

For a versatile side table — and honestly one of the most useful single pieces Nardi makes — the Nardi Cube 80 Table is a hero of small-space styling. It is a clean, cubic form that works as an occasional table, a drinks stand beside a lounge chair, or, tucked in a corner, a plinth for a big planter or a lantern.

Nardi Cube 80 Outdoor Table

Its simple geometry in Tortora, Antracite, Tabacco or Bianco makes it endlessly flexible — a designer's favourite precisely because it never dictates the scheme, it just quietly serves it.

If your secondary zone is a dining or gathering spot, the Nardi Tevere 210 Extendable Table earns its place. This is a substantial, extendable table that seats a crowd when opened and pulls back to a friendlier footprint day to day — the outdoor equivalent of a dining table that grows for Christmas.

Nardi Tevere 210 Extendable Outdoor Table

In Terra Regeneration, Corda, Tortora and Antracite, Tevere gives an outdoor living room a proper anchor for its dining zone, so the space handles both a quiet coffee for two and a long lunch for ten. The extendable mechanism means you are not committing a big footprint to the garden every day of the year — a genuine luxury in a typical Irish patio.

And do not forget flexible extra seating. The ReGen Stack Maxi Stool is the piece I recommend to absolutely everyone. Made from Nardi's ReGen recycled material, these stools stack neatly away when not needed and pull out instantly when extra guests arrive — and doubling as a side table or a footrest, they are the most quietly hardworking thing you can own.

Nardi ReGen Stack Maxi Stool in recycled material

In earthy Gesso, Cactus, Terra and Basalto, the Stack Maxi is proof that flexibility and good looks are not mutually exclusive. Keep three or four stacked discreetly by the wall and you will never be caught short of a seat again.

Step Five: Shade, Shelter and the Floor

A room needs a sense of enclosure to feel like a room, and outdoors that comes from two directions: overhead and underfoot. Get both working and even an open patio starts to feel embracing rather than exposed.

Overhead, think about shade and shelter. A parasol, a sail shade, a pergola or a retractable awning does more than block the sun — it draws a ceiling line over your lounge zone and defines the room's footprint. In Ireland, shelter from a passing shower is often more valuable than shade from the sun, so a solid pergola or an awning you can deploy quickly will earn its keep far more than a flimsy parasol. Position your overhead cover to shelter the sofa first; that is the piece you least want to dash indoors to protect.

Underfoot, an outdoor rug is the single most transformative and underused trick in the book. A large, weatherproof outdoor rug laid under the sofa and coffee table instantly grounds the arrangement, warms up cold paving or decking, and — more than anything — announces “this is a room.” Size it generously: the front legs of your sofa and lounge chairs should sit on the rug, not floating in front of it. An undersized rug makes the whole group look like it is standing on a postage stamp. Choose a flat-weave polypropylene rug in a tone that ties your frames and cushions together, and you have laid the literal foundation of the space.

Add a few large planters at this stage too. Tall grasses, olive trees, bay, or structural evergreens in generous pots act as soft green walls, screening the space, filtering wind and giving the room its living, breathing edges. Planters are also the easiest way to mark the boundary between your lounge zone and a secondary zone without building anything permanent.

Step Six: Light It for the Evening — the Detail Everyone Forgets

Here is the truth that separates a good outdoor room from a great one: the space you use most is the evening space, and the evening space is made entirely of light. All the beautiful furniture in the world disappears at dusk if you have not thought about lighting. And the mistake almost everyone makes is relying on a single harsh floodlight bolted to the house wall, which flattens the whole garden into a car-park glare and sends everyone's eyes squinting.

The designer's approach is exactly the same as indoors: layers of low, warm, localised light rather than one bright source. You want pools of glow at table height and eye level — on the coffee table, on side tables, along a low wall — so the room feels intimate and dimensional, with soft shadows and warm corners. And outdoors, cordless rechargeable lamps have quietly revolutionised how easy this is to achieve. No wiring, no sockets, no trailing leads across wet paving — you simply charge them, place them wherever the mood calls for, and move them as the evening shifts.

For the coffee table and side tables, the Securit Angelina Cordless Table Lamp is a beautiful choice. These are elegant, rechargeable LED lamps with a dimmable warm glow, designed for exactly this kind of hospitality-grade outdoor use, and they come in a practical pack of six — enough to light an entire outdoor living room in one go.

Dot a couple on the Komodo Tavolino, one on each Cube 80 side table, and a couple along a wall or step, and you have created that layered, restaurant-terrace glow that makes people want to stay long after the sun has gone. The dimmable function is the secret — bright enough to see your food at dinner, low enough to feel like candlelight by eleven.

For a slightly different silhouette on the dining or drinks table, the Securit Georgina Cordless Table Lamp offers the same cordless, rechargeable convenience in an alternative form — mix the two shapes across your zones for a collected, characterful look rather than a uniform row.

And for the practical, taller light you want near where drinks are poured or food is served, the Securit Barcelona Cordless Service Lamp is the workhorse — a sturdier, brighter rechargeable lamp built for hospitality service, perfect on a Tevere table or a drinks station.

Securit Barcelona cordless service lamp in black

Beyond the table lamps, layer in a few more sources for depth: warm-white festoon or string lights slung overhead between the house and a pergola post to draw that all-important ceiling line; a couple of oversized lanterns with real or LED candles on the floor beside the sofa; and perhaps some discreet uplighting into a specimen tree or planter to give the garden's edges a soft, dimensional glow. The principle throughout is warm and low — aim for a warm colour temperature around 2200–2700K, keep every source below eye level where you can, and never point anything directly at where people sit. Do this and your outdoor room will be at its most magical precisely when your indoor rooms have long since emptied.

Step Seven: Dress the Table and Finish the Room

The last ten per cent is what makes a space feel designed rather than merely furnished, and outdoors it is exactly the same as in. Once the sofa, chairs, tables and lighting are in place, it is the styling — the soft, the tactile, the edible — that brings the room to life and signals that people are meant to enjoy it.

Start with the table itself. A dressed outdoor table transforms a functional surface into a reason to gather. Beautiful, durable tableware is the key, and our Fine Dine tableware collection is built for precisely this — melamine and hospitality-grade pieces that look every bit as refined as porcelain but will survive a garden, a stone floor and a full evening outdoors without a nervous thought. Layer chargers under plates, add textured linen napkins, a low bowl of lemons or garden herbs, and you have a table that says “sit down and stay.” Keep centrepieces low so conversation flows across them, and repeat one or two colours from your cushions to tie the table back into the wider room.

Then dress the seating. Outdoor scatter cushions and a couple of weatherproof throws add the softness and the layered comfort that make a sofa irresistible — and they are the easiest, cheapest way to refresh the whole scheme season to season or introduce an accent colour. A folded throw over the arm of a Doga chair on a cool evening is both practical and quietly inviting.

Finish with the small, human touches: a tray on the coffee table holding your lamp, a candle and a carafe; a stack of outdoor cushions ready by the wall; a couple of the Stack Maxi stools doubling as drinks perches; a generous planter softening a hard corner. These are the details your eye reads as “cared for,” and they are what make guests instinctively relax the moment they step outside.

Putting It All Together: A Sample Scheme

Let me pull the whole masterclass into one concrete example, so you can see how the layers stack. Picture a medium patio, roughly five metres by four, facing the late-afternoon sun with a fence to the left you would rather screen.

  • Anchor: A Nardi Komodo 5 Lounger in a Basalto frame with Perla cushions, floated off the wall and arranged as a corner suite facing the sun.
  • Lounge chairs: Two Folio Armchairs in Agave, angled toward the sofa to close the conversation circle, with a Doga Relax rocker in Marsala as the coveted corner seat.
  • Tables: A Komodo Tavolino centred on the group, a Cube 80 beside the rocker, and a couple of Stack Maxi stools tucked by the wall for overflow.
  • Floor and shade: A large flat-weave outdoor rug in soft grey-green grounding the whole group, a pergola or awning drawing a ceiling line over the sofa, and three tall planters of grasses screening that left-hand fence.
  • Light: A pack of Securit Angelina lamps spread across the tables and wall, festoon lights overhead, and two floor lanterns beside the sofa.
  • Dressing: Scatter cushions and a throw picking up the Marsala accent, a styled tray on the Tavolino, and the table set with pieces from the Fine Dine collection for long summer suppers.

Every element there does a job — anchor, conversation, surface, enclosure, glow, softness — and every element can stay outside through an Irish year without complaint. That is the whole philosophy of the outdoor living room in a single patio.

A Final Word on Buying Well

An outdoor living room is a considered purchase, and I would always rather you bought fewer, better pieces than a garden full of things you replace every second summer. This is exactly why Nardi has been our anchor throughout. A family firm from Chiampo in Italy, they make furniture from batch-dyed, anti-UV, fully recyclable resin engineered to live outdoors uncovered — through Atlantic rain, salt air, frost and sun — and to still look beautiful a decade from now. Pair that structural quality with thoughtful lighting and styling, and you have not simply decorated a patio. You have built a room, and gained a whole extra season of living.

Take it in the order we have walked through — read and zone the space, choose your modular anchor, build out the lounge seating, layer the tables, sort the shade and the floor, light it warmly for the evening, and dress it to finish — and you cannot really go wrong. Start with the sofa, and let the room grow from there.

When you are ready to begin, explore the full range and build your own outdoor living room with the full Nardi collection at Custom Wood Designs. We would love to help you turn your patch of Irish sky into the best room in the house.
