If you have ever bought garden furniture in Ireland, you already know the quiet heartbreak of it. The set looks glorious in June. By the following spring the timber has gone grey and furry, the steel legs are weeping rust onto the patio, the rattan is unravelling and the cushions smell of a damp tent. Our climate is simply brutal on outdoor furniture, and most of what is sold on these islands was never designed to survive it.
This guide is the antidote. We will walk through exactly what Irish and coastal weather does to garden furniture, why certain materials shrug it off while others rot, rust and fade, and which real, made-to-order pieces from Nardi we would put in an exposed Irish garden or a seafront terrace with total confidence. Everything below is available to order from Custom Wood Designs, and every recommendation is a genuine product you can click through to.
The five enemies of outdoor furniture in Ireland
Ireland does not have one difficult season, it has a rolling year of them. Understanding the specific forces at work is the first step to buying furniture you will still love in a decade rather than resenting by next Easter.
1. Rain and constant damp — rust and rot
Ireland sees rain on roughly 150 to 225 days a year depending on where you live, and even when it is not raining the humidity rarely drops. That relentless moisture is the number one killer of garden furniture. Untreated or poorly sealed timber absorbs water, swells, splits and eventually rots. Steel and iron frames — even powder-coated ones — begin to corrode the moment a chip or scratch lets water reach the metal underneath. Chipboard and MDF cores in cheap "outdoor" tables swell and crumble. If a material can hold water, an Irish year will find a way to exploit it.
2. Salt air — accelerated corrosion
Near the coast, and a huge share of Irish homes are within a few kilometres of the sea, the air carries a fine mist of salt. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against surfaces, and it is electrochemically aggressive. It turns ordinary rusting into rapid corrosion, attacks screws, bolts, hinges and welds, and pits aluminium that has not been properly treated. Seafront furniture ages at a pace that would shock an inland gardener.
3. UV — fading and brittleness
We joke about the lack of sun, but Irish summers deliver genuinely strong ultraviolet light, and UV does not need heat to do damage. It bleaches colour out of fabrics and plastics, and over time it breaks down the polymer chains in cheap resin and un-stabilised plastic, leaving them chalky, faded and brittle enough to crack under normal use. A sun lounger that was glossy anthracite in year one can look like weathered driftwood by year three if the material was never UV-stabilised.
4. Wind — lightweight pieces blowing over
Atlantic gales are a fact of Irish life, and coastal and exposed gardens routinely see gusts that send flimsy furniture cartwheeling across the lawn. Feather-light stacking chairs, hollow plastic pieces and umbrellas with inadequate bases become genuine hazards — chipping paintwork, cracking glass tops and occasionally injuring people. Weight and low, stable geometry matter far more here than in a sheltered Mediterranean courtyard.
5. Mould and mildew — the damp-cushion problem
Finally, the humidity that rots timber also breeds mould and mildew on soft furnishings. Ordinary foam-and-polyester cushions soak up moisture, never fully dry in our climate and quickly develop black spotting, musty smells and rotten stitching. For most Irish households the cushions fail long before the furniture frame does — unless the cushions were engineered for exactly this.
Pro tip: When you assess any outdoor set, ask one question of every component — frame, fixings, tabletop core and cushions alike: "What happens to this after 200 wet days and a salty gale?" If you cannot answer confidently for all four, keep looking.
Why materials matter more than looks
Almost every outdoor furniture disappointment traces back to the material, not the design. Here is how the common options actually cope with an Irish year.
Timber
Hardwoods like teak can last if you are diligent, but "diligent" means annual oiling, scrubbing off algae and accepting either a silvery weathered look or a constant maintenance ritual. Softwood furniture rots far faster. In a damp, shaded or coastal Irish garden even good timber struggles to stay looking its best.
Steel and iron
Beautiful when new, but any breach in the coating invites rust, and in salt air the countdown is short. Rust stains spread to patios and decking, and structural corrosion eventually makes frames unsafe.
Natural and cheap synthetic rattan
Natural rattan is an indoor material full stop. Budget synthetic "rattan" is usually PVC wicker wrapped over a steel frame — the wicker goes brittle and cracks under UV while the hidden frame rusts from the inside. You get the worst of both worlds.
Nardi's fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene resin
This is where Nardi, the renowned Italian manufacturer, changes the conversation. Their furniture is moulded from fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene resin, an engineering-grade material developed specifically to defeat everything described above:
- Rust-proof and rot-proof — there is no metal to corrode and no timber to rot. Rain and damp simply run off.
- Frost-proof — the resin stays stable and does not crack through Irish winter freeze-thaw cycles, so it can live outdoors year round.
- UV-stabilised — the polymer is treated to resist ultraviolet degradation, so it keeps its strength and colour rather than going chalky and brittle.
- Colour-through — the pigment runs all the way through the material, not just a sprayed surface, so a scuff or scratch does not reveal a different colour underneath and there is no paint to flake.
- Low-maintenance — no oiling, no sanding, no repainting. A rinse and an occasional wipe with mild soapy water is genuinely the whole care routine.
- Fibreglass-reinforced strength — the glass fibre gives the resin real rigidity and load-bearing strength, so pieces feel solid, not flimsy, and resist the flexing that cracks cheaper plastics.
Why Sunbrella® cushions win in a wet climate
A weatherproof frame deserves weatherproof cushions, and this is where most sets fall down. Nardi's outdoor cushions are made with Sunbrella® solution-dyed acrylic — the benchmark performance fabric for marine and outdoor use. The difference is fundamental.
In ordinary printed fabric, colour sits on the surface of the fibre and washes or bleaches away. In solution-dyed acrylic the colour is locked into the fibre while it is still liquid, so the pigment runs all the way through. That single fact drives everything Irish gardeners care about:
- Fade resistant — the through-dyed fibre holds its colour against strong summer UV for years, not months.
- Water and stain resistant — the fabric sheds water rather than soaking it up, so cushions dry quickly instead of staying sodden.
- Mould and mildew resistant — because the acrylic itself is not a food source and dries fast, it denies mould the damp foothold it needs.
- Salt-air ready — the same properties that make Sunbrella the default choice for boat upholstery make it ideal for seafront terraces.
We go far deeper into fabric colours, ranges and care in our companion piece, the complete guide to Nardi outdoor fabrics and Sunbrella colours. If you want a single replacement cushion to feel the quality, the Maximo Sunbrella® cushion is a perfect example of the standard.
Pro tip: Even the best outdoor cushions last longest if you bring them in or box them during long wet spells over winter. The frames can stay out all year; giving the cushions an easy dry retreat simply extends their life further.
Weight and wind stability
A material can be perfectly weatherproof and still let you down in a gale if the piece is too light. Nardi resin has real substance to it, and the ranges are engineered with low centres of gravity, wide stable footprints and clever details like feet that grip rather than skate. Modular sofas such as Komodo and Maximo are heavy, grounded pieces that stay put. Dining and stacking chairs are weighty enough to resist ordinary gusts yet light enough to move when you want to. For genuinely exposed sites, choose armchairs and loungers over the very lightest side chairs, and keep umbrellas on a properly weighted base.
Coastal and seafront gardens — the special case
If you live within sight or smell of the sea, treat furniture selection as its own category. Salt spray is the single most destructive force in the Irish outdoor-furniture world, and it is precisely where metal frames, painted finishes and exposed fixings fail fastest.
The winning coastal formula is simple: resin frames plus Sunbrella® or Sunbrella-style textile. With no ferrous metal to corrode, no sprayed paint to lift and colour-through pigment that salt cannot bleach, Nardi resin is effectively immune to the salt attack that eats conventional sets. Where metal is used, such as the aluminium legs on some extending tables, it is treated to marine-grade standards.
Your only real coastal maintenance job is a routine so easy it barely counts:
- Rinse furniture with fresh water every week or two, and always after a storm, to wash off accumulated salt before it can concentrate on the surface.
- Pay attention to any joints, fixings and the underside of tabletops where salty moisture lingers.
- Wipe down with mild soapy water a few times a season, then rinse clear.
That is it. No sanding, no oiling, no wire-brushing rust. For a seafront terrace we would happily specify the Nardi Atlantico stackable sun lounger and the Nardi Net chair, both of which are as at home beside the Atlantic as beside a hotel pool.
Our recommendations by use
Here is where theory becomes a shopping list. Everything below is made to order and available to order now. Browse the full range in the Nardi outdoor furniture collection, or use these curated picks by how you actually want to use your space.
Best modular lounge — Komodo and Maximo
For relaxed outdoor living, a modular resin sofa is the flagship choice, and Nardi gives you two brilliant systems. Komodo is the classic, generously proportioned modular range you configure from individual sections — start with a Komodo central sofa module and a Komodo corner module to build an L-shape, then add the matching Komodo coffee table in the centre.
Maximo is the newer, more contemporary modular system with a lighter visual line and the same interlocking logic. Combine the Maximo modular armchair with Maximo centre seat modules to create anything from a two-seater to a sprawling corner lounge. Both systems pair with Sunbrella® cushions and are heavy enough to stay planted through a windy weekend.
Best dining chairs and sets
For everyday outdoor dining you want chairs that look elegant, stay comfortable and survive being left out. The Nardi Riva chair and the Nardi Bora chair are handsome, comfortable armchairs in colour-through resin, while the Nardi Doga armchair brings a slatted, on-trend look. Pair them with a weatherproof extending table so you can seat two or ten as needed — the Alloro 140–210 extensible table, the Libeccio extensible table or the larger Rio extensible table are all built for permanent outdoor life.
Best sun loungers
A lounger spends its whole life flat to the sky, catching every drop of rain and every hour of UV, so material really matters here. The reclining Nardi Plano sun lounger is a sculptural, solid-resin statement piece. For stackable, space-smart options the Omega stackable lounger and the Alfa stackable lounger with armrests combine a resin frame with a quick-drying textile bed that will not hold damp. All three are equally at home poolside, on a patio or on an exposed coastal deck.
Best compact and balcony picks
Small space, same weather. For balconies, courtyards and compact patios, choose pieces that fold, stack or double up. The Nardi Net Relax chair gives you a proper lounge chair without the bulk, the folding Nardi Folio armchair tucks away when not needed, and the compact Nardi Cube 80 table seats a couple for coffee or dinner. A pairing of Folio armchairs and a Cube table is a complete, weatherproof balcony set in a tiny footprint.
Best low-maintenance stackable chairs
When you want extra seating you can pull out for guests and stack away the rest of the time, stackable resin chairs are unbeatable. The Cassia stackable chair, the Tiberina stackable armchair and the Nardi Bit stackable chair all stack neatly, weigh enough to stay put in a breeze, and need nothing more than an occasional rinse. They are the definition of low-maintenance Irish outdoor seating.
Making it last — the easy care routine
The joy of resin is how little it asks of you. There is no seasonal ritual of sanding, oiling or repainting. To keep any Nardi piece looking its best:
- Wipe frames with mild soapy water and a soft cloth a few times a season, then rinse.
- Near the coast, add a plain fresh-water rinse every week or two to clear salt.
- Store Sunbrella® cushions somewhere dry during prolonged winter wet — the frames are happy to stay out.
- Use a fitted cover on larger sets over winter if you like, mainly to keep leaves and debris off.

Frequently asked questions
What outdoor furniture is best for the Irish weather?
The best outdoor furniture for Ireland is made from materials that ignore damp, salt and UV rather than fighting them. Nardi's fibreglass-reinforced polypropylene resin is rust-proof, rot-proof, frost-proof and UV-stabilised, with colour running all the way through, so it survives our wet, windy, humid climate with almost no maintenance. Paired with fade- and mould-resistant Sunbrella® acrylic cushions, it is about as future-proof as garden furniture gets on these islands.
Does Nardi furniture rust?
No. The overwhelming majority of Nardi furniture contains no ferrous metal at all — it is moulded from resin, so there is nothing to rust. Where metal such as aluminium is used on certain table frames, it is treated for outdoor and marine conditions and does not corrode the way steel or iron does. Rust simply is not part of the Nardi ownership experience.
Is resin furniture good for coastal areas?
Resin is arguably the ideal material for coastal and seafront gardens. Salt air is devastating to metal and paint, but Nardi's UV-stabilised, colour-through resin has no metal to corrode and no coating to lift, so salt cannot get a foothold. Combined with a quick fresh-water rinse every week or two, resin furniture stays looking new in exactly the environment that destroys conventional sets.
Can outdoor furniture stay out all year in Ireland?
Nardi resin frames are designed to live outdoors year round, including through frost, so the furniture itself can absolutely stay out all year. The one component we suggest protecting is the cushions — while Sunbrella® fabric is highly water and mould resistant, bringing cushions indoors or boxing them during long winter wet spells will extend their life even further.
What's the most weatherproof garden furniture?
The most weatherproof garden furniture combines a frame that cannot rust or rot with cushions that will not fade or grow mould. In practice that means UV-stabilised, colour-through resin frames — as Nardi makes — matched with solution-dyed Sunbrella® acrylic cushions. That pairing defeats all five of the Irish enemies at once: rain, salt, UV, wind and mildew, with only a rinse and an occasional wipe to maintain it.
The bottom line
Irish and coastal weather will find the weakness in any piece of outdoor furniture — the timber that rots, the steel that rusts, the plastic that fades, the cushion that moulds. The way to win is not to fight the climate with endless maintenance, but to choose materials the climate cannot touch. Nardi's fibreglass-reinforced resin and Sunbrella® fabrics do exactly that, which is why we recommend them for everything from a tiny city balcony to an exposed Atlantic terrace.
Explore the full made-to-order range across our Nardi outdoor furniture pieces, and buy once for the Irish weather rather than every couple of years.
Whatever your space, from a windswept coastal deck to a sheltered city courtyard, there is a made-to-order Nardi piece built to outlast the Irish climate.
