Weatherproof & Worry-Free: Why Nardi Is Perfect for the Irish Climate

Weatherproof and Worry-Free: Why Nardi Is the Perfect Outdoor Furniture for the Irish Climate

If you have ever bought garden furniture in Ireland, you will know the quiet heartbreak of it. You buy something lovely in a burst of May optimism, you enjoy it for a handful of golden evenings, and then the weather does what Irish weather does. By the following spring the timber has gone grey and splintery, the metal frame is weeping rust down the legs, and the rattan has begun to unravel like an old jumper. You cover it, you drag it into the shed, you feel a small pang of guilt every time you look at it. Sound familiar?

Here in Ireland we do not get extreme weather so much as relentless weather. It is rarely brutally hot or savagely cold, but it is almost always damp, frequently windy, and never quite predictable. A single week can hand you warm sunshine, horizontal rain, a salty coastal gale and a surprise night of frost. Outdoor furniture that merely survives a Mediterranean summer simply is not built for that kind of year-round test. What you need is furniture engineered for exactly this: for moisture, for salt, for UV, for wind and for cold. And that, in a nutshell, is why we keep coming back to Nardi.

At Custom Wood Designs we have supplied outdoor and hospitality furniture across Ireland for years, to homes, cafes, restaurants, hotels and beer gardens along some of the most exposed stretches of the Atlantic coast. We have watched what lasts and what does not. Nardi has quietly become the range we trust most for the Irish climate, and in this guide we want to explain exactly why, from the engineering behind the resin to the practical business of which ranges suit an exposed clifftop garden versus a sheltered city courtyard.

Who Are Nardi, and Why Should You Trust Them?

Before we talk about weatherproofing, it helps to know who makes this furniture, because the story explains the quality. Nardi is a family-run Italian company based in Chiampo, a town in the Veneto region near Vicenza in the north-east of Italy. They have been designing and manufacturing outdoor furniture for decades, and everything they sell is made in Italy rather than outsourced to the lowest bidder. That matters. When a company keeps its manufacturing at home, generation after generation, it tends to care a great deal about getting the details right.

Today Nardi furniture is sold across five continents, which tells you something important: this is furniture that has to perform in the humidity of Southeast Asia, the fierce sun of Australia, the salt air of the Mediterranean and, yes, the damp chill of a northern European winter. A company cannot ship to that many climates and keep its reputation intact unless the product genuinely holds up. The design language is unmistakably Italian too, all clean lines and considered proportions, so you are not choosing between good looks and durability. With Nardi you get both.

The other thing worth knowing is that Nardi has made sustainability a serious part of its identity. The resin they use is fully recyclable, and their newer ReGen ranges are made using regenerated raw materials, taking industrial fibre and glass that would otherwise be waste and turning it into beautiful, hard-wearing furniture. For anyone who wants their garden to look good without a guilty conscience, that is a genuine bonus.

The Engineering: What Nardi Furniture Is Actually Made Of

Here is where the magic happens, and it is worth understanding because it explains everything that follows. Most Nardi furniture is made from fibreglass-reinforced resin. That phrase does a lot of work, so let us unpack it.

Fibreglass-reinforced resin, not cheap plastic

The word "plastic" tends to make people flinch, because we all remember the flimsy white patio chairs that cracked the moment a heavier relative sat down and went brittle and yellow after one summer. Nardi's resin is a world away from that. By blending high-grade resin with fibreglass fibres, Nardi creates a material that is enormously strong, slightly flexible where it needs to be, and resistant to the cracking and warping that plague cheaper plastics. The fibreglass acts like the steel reinforcement in concrete, giving the material a structural backbone. The result is furniture that feels solid and substantial in the hand, that can take real weight, and that shrugs off the knocks of everyday use.

Batch-dyed, anti-UV colour that will not fade

This is the detail that separates Nardi from almost everything else on the market, and it is the one we find ourselves explaining to customers most often. Nardi's colour is not painted or sprayed onto the surface. The pigment, along with UV stabilisers, is mixed right through the resin before the furniture is moulded, so the colour is the same the whole way through the material. This is what "batch-dyed" means.

Think about what that achieves. When colour is only on the surface, as with painted timber or powder-coated metal, any scratch, chip or scuff exposes a different colour underneath and becomes a starting point for rust or rot. With Nardi, a scratch is barely visible because the material is the same colour all the way down. More importantly, the anti-UV additives baked into the resin mean the colour does not bleach and fade in sunlight the way surface finishes do. Irish sun may be shy, but it is still UV, and over years it will strip the life out of unprotected colour. A batch-dyed Nardi chair in Antracite grey or a warm Tabacco will look just as rich after five Irish summers as it did on day one.

Salt, rain and frost resistance built in

Because the resin is non-porous, it simply does not absorb water. This one property solves a cascade of problems. Water cannot soak in to cause swelling, warping or rot the way it does with timber. There is no iron in the material, so there is nothing to rust the way there is with steel and even, over time, with aluminium fixings. And crucially for our winters, because the material does not absorb water, there is no trapped moisture to freeze, expand and crack the furniture when temperatures drop below zero. Salt, the great enemy of coastal furniture, has no chemical purchase on inert resin either. It simply rinses off.

Put all of this together and you have furniture that can genuinely live outdoors all year round in Ireland without deteriorating. That is not marketing language, it is a straightforward consequence of the materials science.

The Real Test: Nardi Against the Irish Weather

Engineering claims are all very well, but let us get specific about the actual conditions your furniture will face in Ireland, and how Nardi handles each one.

Scenario one: the coastal salt gauntlet

Ireland has one of the longest, most beautiful and most exposed coastlines in Europe. If your garden looks out over the sea in Clare, Kerry, Donegal, Wexford or anywhere along the Wild Atlantic Way, your furniture is living in a permanent fine mist of salt. Salt is devastating to conventional furniture. It accelerates the corrosion of any metal, works its way into the joints of timber, and leaves a crusty white residue on almost everything.

Nardi resin is completely indifferent to salt. There is nothing in the material for salt to corrode or degrade, so a salty coastal atmosphere that would reduce a steel bistro set to a rusty ruin in two seasons has essentially no effect. When the salt builds up visibly, you rinse it off with fresh water and the furniture looks new again. For seaside homes and coastal cafes, this is transformative. The Nardi Net Chair, with its clean monobloc form and no fiddly joints for salt to hide in, is a particular favourite for exposed coastal terraces.

Scenario two: the endless Irish damp

Even away from the coast, the defining feature of the Irish climate is moisture. It is not always raining, but it is very often damp, and the humidity rarely drops for long. This constant dampness is what turns timber furniture grey and green with algae, and what leaves metal furniture spotted with rust and mould. Cushions left out get that musty smell, and rattan starts to sag and darken.

Because Nardi resin does not absorb water, damp simply sits on the surface and then evaporates or runs off. Algae and mould struggle to take hold on the smooth, non-porous surface, and when they do appear they wipe away easily with soapy water. There is no grain for green film to root into, no fibres to soak up moisture. A Nardi Riva chair left out through a damp Irish autumn needs only a wipe-down to look presentable again, where a timber equivalent would need sanding and re-oiling.

Scenario three: the sudden gale

Wind is the quiet troublemaker of Irish gardens. We get named storms rolling in off the Atlantic several times a winter, and even an ordinary breezy day can send lightweight furniture skittering across the patio or tumbling into flower beds. There is a balance to strike here. Furniture needs to be light enough to move around when you want to rearrange it, but stable enough not to become a sail in a gale.

Nardi's designs are cleverly weighted for this. Pieces like the Trill Bistrot Chair have a low centre of gravity and a stable footprint, and many chairs are stackable, which means when a serious storm is forecast you can quickly stack them and tuck them against a wall or into a corner. Heavier dining tables anchor a setting nicely, while the lighter chairs give you flexibility. For very exposed sites we usually advise choosing pieces you can stack and store quickly, and we will come back to specific recommendations later.

Scenario four: the winter freeze

Irish winters are rarely arctic, but we do get frost, the occasional hard freeze and, every few years, a proper cold snap with snow and ice. This is the moment that destroys water-logged furniture. When water that has soaked into timber or collected in the hollow joints of metal furniture freezes, it expands, and that expansion cracks and splits the material from the inside out. It is the same force that makes potholes in the roads.

Nardi furniture side-steps this entirely. Since the resin does not absorb water in the first place, there is nothing inside the material to freeze and expand. The furniture can sit out through frost and freeze-thaw cycles without cracking. It stays flexible enough in the cold not to become dangerously brittle, unlike cheap plastics that shatter if you so much as knock them in freezing weather. You can genuinely leave Nardi out all winter, and many of our customers do, though as we will discuss, a cover extends the good looks even further.

Comparing Nardi to Timber, Metal and Rattan

To really understand why we recommend Nardi so often, it helps to line it up honestly against the other materials you will be considering. Each has its charms, and we sell and love beautiful timber pieces too, but for year-round Irish outdoor use the comparison is instructive.

Nardi versus timber

Timber is warm, natural and gorgeous, and there is nothing quite like it. But wood is a living material, and it behaves like one. Left outdoors in Ireland, untreated or under-maintained timber greys, cracks, grows algae and can rot where water pools in joints and end grain. Even good hardwoods like teak need regular oiling to keep their colour, and softwoods need annual treatment. The maintenance is real and ongoing. Nardi asks for none of that. There is no sanding, no oiling, no annual re-treating. If you love the look of wood, the honest trade-off is that you are signing up for the upkeep. If you want the look of good design with none of the labour, resin wins.

Nardi versus metal

Metal furniture, whether steel or aluminium, can look sharp and modern. The problem is rust. Steel rusts, full stop, and in a damp, salty Irish climate it rusts quickly, especially once the protective coating is chipped. Aluminium resists rust far better, but its fixings, bolts and welds can still corrode, and powder-coated finishes chip and fade. Metal also has a habit of becoming painfully hot in direct sun and icy cold to the touch in winter. Nardi resin stays comfortable to sit on across the temperature range, never rusts, and its colour cannot chip off because it runs all the way through. We do offer some excellent aluminium pieces for particular looks, but for pure low-maintenance longevity, resin has the edge.

Nardi versus rattan

Synthetic rattan has become hugely popular, and the good stuff is genuinely weather-resistant. But there are real differences. Cheaper rattan uses a PVC weave over a steel frame, and that inner frame can rust, while the weave itself can become brittle and unravel under UV exposure over the years. Rattan also traps dirt, leaves and moisture in its weave, making it fiddlier to clean than a smooth surface you can simply hose down. And almost all rattan furniture depends on cushions to be usable, which brings its own storage headache in our climate. Nardi's solid resin pieces wipe clean in seconds and, in many cases, need no cushions at all to be comfortable.

A Closer Look at Nardi Pieces for the Irish Garden

Let us walk through a selection of Nardi ranges, so you can start to picture how they might work in your own space. One of the joys of the collection is its breadth, from delicate bistro chairs to sprawling modular sofas, all sharing the same weatherproof DNA.

The Komodo modular lounge system

If you want a proper outdoor living room, the Nardi Komodo 5 Multi-Layout Outdoor Lounger is a showpiece. This is a modular seating system you can arrange and rearrange into different layouts to suit your space and the occasion, from a long sociable run of seating to a cosy corner configuration. The resin frames are, of course, fully weatherproof, so the structure lives outdoors happily year-round. The cushions are the one element you will want to bring in or cover during the worst weather, and we will talk about covers shortly. For a patio or a sheltered terrace where you want to lounge rather than dine, Komodo is hard to beat.

The Doga family of chairs

The Nardi Doga Outdoor Armchair is one of our favourites for its combination of comfort and colour. The gently ribbed backrest is genuinely comfortable without a cushion, and the range comes in a beautiful palette of contemporary colours, from soft Perla and Menta to rich Marsala, Tabacco and Antracite. Because the colour is batch-dyed through the resin, those shades stay vivid season after season. Doga chairs suit both dining settings and relaxed lounging, and they look every bit as at home in a stylish restaurant terrace as in a private garden.

The Net collection

The Net range, including the Nardi Net Chair, is a masterclass in simple, robust design. Each chair is a single moulded piece with a distinctive perforated shell that lets rainwater drain straight through rather than pooling on the seat, which is a lovely practical touch for the Irish climate. There are no joints, no fixings and no fabric, so there is genuinely nothing to go wrong. Available in cheerful colours like Senape yellow, Corallo, Salice green and classic neutrals, the Net Chair is superb for busy hospitality settings and exposed gardens alike, precisely because it is so utterly fuss-free.

Bistro chairs for cafes and small spaces

For balconies, small patios and cafe frontages, the bistro chairs are ideal. The Nardi Trill Bistrot Chair comes in a remarkable range of colours, eight or more including Ottanio, Senape, Tabacco and Agave, so you can match a brand, a mood or an existing scheme. They are lightweight, stackable and stable, which makes them perfect for spaces where furniture needs to be moved and stored frequently. For hospitality customers especially, being able to stack chairs quickly at close of business, or ahead of a storm, is a real practical advantage.

Tables built to match

A weatherproof chair deserves a weatherproof table. The Nardi Cube 80 Outdoor Table is a neat, sturdy square table in the same durable resin, sized nicely for four and available in Tortora, Antracite, Tabacco and Bianco to coordinate with your chairs. Cleverly, several Nardi tables are designed with a hollow interior so you can nest and store items or, in some models, stack them. For larger gatherings, the Nardi Tevere 210 Extendable Outdoor Table is a brilliant piece of engineering: it extends to seat more guests when you need it and folds back down when you do not, all in weatherproof resin that lives outdoors permanently. It comes in handsome finishes including Antracite and the regenerated Terra and Corda colourways.

Loungers for sun and poolside

When the sun does make its welcome appearance, you will want to make the most of it. The Plano Outdoor Sun Lounger by Nardi is a reclining poolside lounger built entirely from weatherproof resin, so unlike timber or fabric loungers it can stay out beside the pool or on the deck without deteriorating. The smooth surface is easy to wipe down after a rain shower, and there are no fabric slings to sag, stain or grow mould. It is the sort of piece that turns a patch of decking into a genuine spot for relaxation.

Stools and casual seating

For casual perching, breakfast bars and flexible entertaining, the ReGen Stack Maxi Stool is a lovely, sustainable choice. Made from Nardi's regenerated material in earthy tones like Terra, Cactus, Gesso and Basalto, these stools stack neatly for storage and bring the same weatherproof toughness to a smaller footprint. They are a favourite for both compact gardens and hospitality venues that need to flex their seating up and down.

The Folio armchair

The Nardi Folio Outdoor Armchair deserves a special mention for its sculptural good looks. With a distinctive slatted back and a comfortable curved seat, it manages to feel both contemporary and inviting, and it comes in colours from crisp Bianco to deep Agave and warm Tabacco. Like the rest of the range it needs no cushion to be comfortable and no maintenance to stay looking sharp, making it a beautiful, practical anchor for a relaxed seating corner.

Which Nardi Ranges Suit Exposed Versus Sheltered Gardens?

One of the most useful things we can offer, having fitted out so many Irish gardens and terraces, is honest guidance on matching the furniture to the exposure of your site. Not every garden faces the same battle, and choosing wisely at the outset saves you effort later.

For very exposed sites

If you are on the coast, on a hilltop, or in any garden that catches the full force of the wind and weather, lean towards the simplest, most robust pieces, ideally ones you can stack and store quickly. Single-piece designs like the Net Chair and the stackable Trill Bistrot Chair are ideal here, because there are no cushions to worry about and they can be tucked away in minutes when a storm is forecast. The perforated Net designs are especially clever for exposed spots because rain drains straight through them. Pair them with a solid, weighted table like the Cube 80 that will not shift in the wind, and choose cushion-free seating so you are never caught out by a sudden downpour.

For sheltered gardens and courtyards

If your space is protected, a walled city courtyard, a sheltered patio, a spot tucked behind the house, you have far more freedom. This is where the cushioned comfort of the Komodo modular lounger really comes into its own, because the cushions are far less exposed to driving rain and can live outdoors more of the time. Sun loungers like the Plano and comfortable armchairs like the Doga and Folio are perfect for creating a relaxed outdoor room you will actually use. In a sheltered spot you can prioritise comfort and looks, confident that the resin will handle whatever weather does reach it.

For hospitality and high-traffic spaces

Cafes, restaurants and beer gardens have their own needs: furniture that looks smart, survives constant use, stacks for cleaning and storage, and copes with being left out night after night. The bistro chairs, the Net range, the extendable Tevere table and the stackable ReGen Maxi Stools are all workhorses in this setting. The batch-dyed colour is a real asset for branding, since it stays vivid, and the fuss-free cleaning keeps staff time down.

Care and Storage: Getting the Very Best from Your Nardi Furniture

The beauty of Nardi is that "care" barely deserves the word, but a few simple habits will keep your furniture looking its absolute best for many years.

Everyday cleaning

For routine cleaning, all you need is warm water, a little mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge. Wipe the furniture down, rinse with clean water and let it air dry. That is genuinely it. Because the resin is non-porous, dirt does not soak in, so it lifts away easily. Avoid abrasive scouring pads and harsh solvents, which are unnecessary and can dull the smooth finish over time. For coastal homes, an occasional rinse with fresh water to clear off accumulated salt is all that is required to keep everything gleaming.

Dealing with stubborn marks

If you get the odd stubborn mark, from a barbecue splash or a dropped glass of red wine, a soft brush with soapy water usually does the trick. For the pale colours like Bianco, a specialist resin cleaner can restore brightness now and then, but for most of the year mild soap is more than enough. Green algae film, should it appear during a long damp spell, wipes off easily and does not stain the way it does on porous timber.

Winter storage and covers

While Nardi furniture is genuinely built to stay outdoors through an Irish winter, taking a couple of sensible steps will keep it looking newer for longer and protect any cushions. The simplest approach for stackable pieces is to stack them, tuck them against a sheltered wall or into a shed or garage over the worst months, and bring cushions indoors to a dry space.

For furniture that stays out, or that is too large to store easily like a Komodo lounge set or a big dining table, a good quality cover is the smartest investment you can make. The Nardi Maximo Outdoor Furniture Cover, available in small, medium and large sizes, is designed to fit Nardi pieces snugly and keep off the worst of the winter rain, leaves and grime. A cover means that when spring arrives you simply whip it off and your furniture is ready to use, with no cleaning required after months of storage. It also keeps cushions and any fabric elements dry, which is where covers really earn their keep in our climate.

A quick winter checklist

• Give everything a wipe-down with mild soapy water before the coldest months set in, so it goes into winter clean.
• Bring cushions and any fabric elements indoors to a dry space, or seal them in a dry storage box.
• Stack stackable chairs and stools and move them to a sheltered spot if you can.
• Cover larger fixed pieces with a fitted cover like the Maximo to keep off rain, leaves and grime.
• For coastal homes, give everything a final fresh-water rinse to clear salt before it sits over winter.

The Long View: Furniture That Pays for Itself

It is worth stepping back and thinking about value over time, because this is where Nardi really makes its case. Cheaper furniture is cheaper for a reason, and in the Irish climate that reason shows up fast. A budget timber or steel set that needs replacing every two or three years, or that demands hours of sanding, oiling and rust-treating each spring, ends up costing far more than a Nardi set that simply keeps going, looking good, year after year, with barely any attention.

When you factor in the years of reliable service, the near-zero maintenance, the retained good looks thanks to batch-dyed colour, and the fact that you are not throwing furniture into landfill every few seasons, Nardi is not the expensive option. It is the economical one. And because the resin is fully recyclable, and the ReGen ranges are made from regenerated materials, it is the responsible choice too. You buy well once, and you get years of easy outdoor living in return.

There is also something to be said for peace of mind. There is a real pleasure in owning outdoor furniture you never have to worry about. No scrambling to drag everything indoors at the first spot of rain, no anxious glances at the forecast, no annual guilt about the maintenance you have not got round to. You just use it, enjoy it, wipe it down now and then, and let the Irish weather do its worst. That is what "weatherproof and worry-free" really means, and it is a genuinely lovely way to own a garden.
